                                                                                                                   Software Development Manager

We are delighted to partner exclusively with our client based in Hampshire who are a technology and consulting company providing solutions for the clinical trials industry.

As the Software Development Manager you will have overall responsibility for managing the software development operations.

You report would directly to the CEO and be responsible for ensuring the resources involved in the software development activities are motivated and challenged; working effectively to achieve the company's business objectives as they relate to the development and release of leading edge software.

You will currently Line manage 8 FTE including onsite and offshore

The Tech Stack:

  • JAVA/JEE (JPA, JSF, JMS, JMX, JTA, Spring, Hibernate, Web Services, Spring Security, Spring MVC, Eclipse RCP, XML, Tapestry)
  • RDBMS/SQL (Oracle, DB2 MySQL)
  • Ajax Web Technologies (GWT, JQuery, JSON)
  • NoSQL Databases (Mongo, ObjectStore)
  • Groovy, Python, JavaScript
  • OS X, Linux, Windows
  • Automated development environment tools including Bitbucket/Jenkins/JIRA

Here's an idea of what you will be doing:

  • Responsible for maintaining, hiring and developing a high performing Software Development team
  • Works with the CEO, Head of Product Management and Head of Operations to contribute thought leadership to the Vision and Strategy for the product
  • Maintains a high level design and release plan beyond next iterations and is measured against delivering functional blocks in alignment with this plan
  • Work within a budget, tracking R&D costs against plan
  • Managing the ongoing development of our software products to achieve our agreed business objectives
  • Ensuring a quality product is released following the appropriate level of quality assurance
  • Manage adherence to our Software Development Life Cycle processes
  • Ensure software designs are sufficiently detailed - in user stories - to satisfy development and testing
  • Ensures software is developed on time, to agreed scope (functional and non-functional requirements) and on budget
  • Ensure Software achieves a status of validated on each product release
  • Ensure technical debt for product does not exceed a level that compromises long term stability
  • Ensures continuous improvement in development processes and approaches
  • Responsible for updating own training records and CV on an ongoing basis
  • Responsible for managing developers objectives and for providing ongoing assessment of developers against their objectives
  • Responsible for ensuring data security/protection in line with policy, that software is designed and developed to be resistant to cyber and malware attacks and escalating any issues or improvements necessary to the quality management team
  • Responsible for learning and applying company working practices and relevant regulations to their own working practice and escalating any issues or improvements to the quality management team

You should recognise yourself here!

  • Bachelor or greater in Computer Science or other scientific/technical field, or extensive experience in the field of software development management
  • Extensive experience as a Development Head of a Product Company
  • Proven leadership in building high performance teams
  • Substantial track record as Software Development Manager
  • Management of dispersed software development teams
  • Experience of developing and optimizing quality management procedures around SDLC
  • Rich experience of working in an Agile (XP, SCRUM, OpenUP) environment
  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure to resolve issues or problems that are time sensitive
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written)
  • Work effectively with a team combining remote and local workers of varying skills
